Intra and Inter-Organisational Knowledge Brokering in Construction Industry (or Architecture, Engineering, and Construction sector)

Special Issue Call:

Construction organisations have been managing knowledge informally for decades but the challenges facing industry today mean that most organisations need a more structured and coherent approach to manage knowledge. They face many problems in managing knowledge due to intrinsic characteristics of the industry they operate. Usually, it has a short-term temporary project based nature with considerable fragmentation than many other industries. The growing realisation of the knowledge-based economy has lead to persistent efforts in managing knowledge within the construction industry. Knowledge can either be generated within organisations or accessed externally; thereby, knowledge flows can be classified as intra or inter-organisation.

Whilst intra-organisational knowledge flows occur within an organisation, inter-organisational knowledge flows can occur downstream (with customers), upstream (with suppliers, universities and other organisations) or horizontal (with competitors). A number of concepts have also been associated with intra-firm knowledge flows (such as retrieval, utilization, acquisition, exchange, sharing and integration), whereas the literature on inter-firm knowledge flows applies concepts like transfer, absorption, adaptation, application, and acquisition (Becker and Knudsen, 2015). It has been argued that a number of barriers hinder effective and successful knowledge flows within an organisation and across its boundaries. However, the knowledge brokering process; although new to the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction sector, is increasingly being argued as a means to overcome barriers that have traditionally impeded intra or inter-organisational knowledge flows. The key attribute of knowledge brokering is facilitating a two-way or multiway exchange of knowledge (Meyer, 2010).

This special issue aims to investigate the latest understanding on knowledge management in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction sector and welcomes high quality original papers in the area of Intra and Inter-organisational knowledge brokering in construction industry. Examples (but not limited to) of some specific topics in the related area that may be addressed are:

  • Knowledge processes that support management in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction sector
  • Techniques for intra or inter-organisational knowledge management and brokering
  • Impacts and outcomes of effective intra-organisational knowledge flows
  • Stakeholders of inter-organisational knowledge brokering
  • Enablers and barriers of intra and inter-organisational knowledge brokering
  • Models of knowledge brokering in practice and their effectiveness in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction sector
  • Knowledge brokering – Lessons Learned from different industrial sectors
